stories. This capacity is the bedrock of value in our industry.
Starfield Independent Studios Inc. “Starfield Indie”, is a creative
Toronto (Canada) and London (UK) studio, drawing together relationships
par excellence to develop, produce and deliver those stories as feature
films, TV series, and trans-media.
Starfield Indie’s team has an excellent track record in telling such
stories across many platforms, and telling them well, for over two
decades. This commitment is behind our proven track record in finance,
pre-sales and audience reach of our scripted drama, documentary series,
and features in international markets.
Our president is producer/financier Mark Pickering (London).
Writer/Producer Philip Jackson (Toronto) is Co- President and Head of
Production & Development.
Mark is a Cambridge (UK) and Columbia (US) graduate IP and entertainment
lawyer. He’s also a producer of theatrical and documentary film and
series. Mark has funded some 30 independent features, including Kenneth
Branagh’s The Magic Flute (premiered at the Venice and Toronto
festivals), and opening theatrically across North America in 2011.
Philip is a critically and commercially recognized, producer/writer of
25 award-winning feature films and scripted-drama series (Starhunter).
He also has many recognized factual and documentary programs to his
credit. Together Philip and Mark have raised direct production funds of
$330,000,000 without public equity.
In creative development, Philip works closely with the award winning
writers and Executive Producers Peter Horton and Nelu Ghiran. The three
form the core creative source at Starfield Indie, and, in turn, work
with commercially sharp independent writers in Canada, USA and Europe,
as required.
Starfield Indie is also developing product with Hollywood producer David
Ginsberg (Get Low, with Robert Duval & Bill Murray). Owner/manager of
the LA boutique agency Insight, David brings us a strong and privileged
marquee packaging capacity.
Our overseas partners include Circles & Lines GmbH (Munich) headed by
Frank Winnenbrock and Hendrick Hey. They own a substantive CGI facility,
are owner-producers of a live daily interactive IPTV network with
science-themed content, and the long-running (over 5,000 hours)
prime-time network TV series Welt Der Wunder, (syndicated across 27
countries) as well as publishing a monthly magazine.
Non-Executive Director Adrian Aston, (Ph.D., London School of
Economics), is a former trade finance banker at Citibank (Europe),
insurance writer for Pinewood Film Studios (UK), Executive Director at
Lloyd's of London, and insurance specialist attached to the Chairman’s
office of CIBC’s Trade Finance division. He subsequently worked with VC
clients in large figure complex internationally structured deals.
Adrian’s mandate is to assist Starfield Indie in developing adaptive and
forward-thinking production finance tools. In Asia, we are proud to have
Hong Kong-based financial executive, Henry Lam, on board.
